Mastitis is the most common and expensive disease in the modern dairy herd. If not controlled it may involve 40% or more of the herd. World-wide the annual cost has been estimated at £95 per cow. In a herd of 100 cows with mastitis rate of 65 cases per annum and a bulk somatic cell count of 200,000 the annual cost of mastitis would typically be £9,100. How is this cost calculated? The list below summarises the areas of loss due to mastitis: • Annual milk loss • Loss of milk production • Treatment and veterinary costs • Costs of discarded milk • Culling of infected animals • Reduced value of milk through diary contract penalties.
Mastitis is caused by organisms gaining entrance through the teat sphincter or canal:

Subclinical mastitis produces the most economic damage.
Early diagnosis of the organism causing an outbreak of mastitis is essential.
